2 men with stained aprons

Are Aprons really necessary??

As an amateur home cook, I've seen countless videos of professional and YouTube chefs alike, wearing Aprons in the kitchen. And often I'd go back to a simpler time where I'd just wipe excess water off on shirt/jeans or just wear really old clothes while cooking to keep the splatter contained to it.

The short answer to the question "Are aprons really necessary" is yes but its not mandatory. But after decades of cooking at home for just myself, for my wife, small/big parties and now for a little one that is due any moment, I can safely attest to the absolute convenience and quality of life upgrade an Apron provides.

1. More Than Just Stain Protection

Yes, aprons excel at shielding your clothes from sauce mishaps, rogue bits of flying food, and flour dust explosions. But their protective powers extend further. They can act as a barrier against heat radiating from the oven or splattering oil from a sizzling pan. There are also rare cases like this one reddit user who's husband has some pretty wild scars on his torso from frying bacon shirtless. I mean it goes without saying you shouldn't be frying anything shirtless, but more power if you do! Just saying, an apron on a shirtless body looks fine as hell!

2. Gear up and Enter the Mind of a Professional Chef

To be honest, with me it started out as some that gets me into the mood to start cooking. It's a pre-requisite for me to start cooking. An apron helps me gear up to be mentally ready to cook. Tie back hair, put on apron, wash hands. The whole process gets me into a complete safety mindset, hygiene oriented mental state. Also, some days where I don't feel like cooking an Apron acts as a trigger to get me into the cooking mood! It's my nudge to get rolling, even when I don't FEEL like cooking!

3. An Eco-Friendly Alternative:

Instead of constantly reaching for new dish towels to wipe your hands, an apron offers a reusable solution. This can significantly reduce paper towel waste and contribute to a more sustainable kitchen routine.

4. A Boost of Confidence:

There's something undeniably empowering about slipping on an apron. It transforms you from an observer to a culinary warrior, ready to tackle any recipe with focus and flair. A well-chosen apron can even add a touch of personality and style to your kitchen adventures.

2. A Pocketful of Convenience:

Many aprons come equipped with pockets – a seemingly simple feature that can be a game-changer. Stash your phone for quick recipe access, keep your favorite cooking utensils close at hand, or use them to hold a dishtowel for easy wiping.
